Common Types and Applications of Geotextiles in Civil Engineering

Jan 17, 2020

There are many types of geotextiles, which have different applications in civil engineering. At present, the following geotextiles are commonly used in civil engineering:

Staple fiber needle punched nonwoven geotextile
Staple fiber needle-punched non-woven geotextile is also called short-filament non-woven geotextile. Staple fiber needle punched non-woven geotextile is made of polyester or polypropylene staple fibers and processed by needle punching equipment with carding and laying equipment. The product has excellent properties such as acid and alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, aging resistance, high strength, stable size, and good filtration ability.

Staple fiber needle punched non-woven geotextiles are mainly applied for civil engineering structure reinforcement, separation, filtration, drainage in the fields of water conservancy, transportation, waste, energy, mining and other fields.

Filament spunbonded needle punched nonwoven geotextile
Filament spunbonded needle-punched non-woven geotextile is also called filament geotextile, filament non-woven geotextile. Filament spunbonded needle-punched non-woven geotextile is made of polyester or polypropylene chips which are melted at high temperature, spun into filament web and then processed by needle-punching equipment to produce a cloth-like coil material.

The product has excellent properties such as high strength, resistance to ultraviolet light, high temperature resistance, creep resistance, strong permeability, and high durability.

Filament spunbonded needle-punched non-woven geotextiles are mainly used for: anti-filtration of dams and slope protection in water conservancy projects, channel separation and seepage prevention; foundation separation/anti-filtration/drainage, soil slopes and retaining walls for roads, railways, and airport runways; road pavement reinforcement and drainage; soft soil treatment of port engineering, beach embankment, seaport pier and breakwater reinforcement and drainage; separation/reinforcement/protective cushion for geomembranes in landfills and tailing waste dams.

Filament woven geotextile
Filament woven geotextile is made of high-strength industrial polypropylene, polyester, nylon and other synthetic fibers as raw materials. It is woven with regular weaving equipment. It has high strength, low elongation, durability, corrosion resistance, and strong water permeability.

Filament woven geotextiles are mainly used for filtering, separation, reinforcement, and protection in geotechnical engineering such as rivers, coasts, harbors, highways, railways, wharfs, tunnels, bridges, and so on.

Split film woven geotextile
The split-membrane woven geotextile is usually made of polypropylene flat yarns, and is woven by circular weaving equipment. It consists of at least two sets of parallel yarns, one set of warp yarns along the longitudinal direction of the loom. The other set of transverse arrangements is called a weft. This product has excellent properties such as anti-ultraviolet, anti-corrosion, high strength and high stability.

Split film yarn woven geotextiles are mainly applied for the reinforcement of soil or stone engineering such as highways, railways, airports, stone dams, breakwaters, retaining walls, backfills, borders, etc. They can prevent the banks erosion caused by wind, waves, tides and rains so they can applied for embankment protection in slopes and bottoms protection. Also this woven geotextiles can be used as a filter in dikes, dams, rivers and coastal stones, soil slopes, retaining walls and so forth.

High-strength polypropylene geotextile
High-strength polypropylene geotextile belongs one category of short filament needle punched nonwoven geotextile or filament spunbonded needle punched nonwoven geotextile. They are produced with only high-quality pp fiber or chips and anti-UV agents. High-strength polypropylene geotextile has distinguished strength and is mainly applied as separation, filtration, reinforcement layer in highways, high-speed railways, mining, landfill, etc.
